1957 Black Widow Tribute
The Story
The Black Widow is an interesting piece of Chevrolet motorsports history. It is a car that you could build with off-the-shelf GM parts, however, Chevrolet never officially built a single Black Widow.
Racing was frowned upon after the tragic accident that occurred at the 1955 24 Hours of Le Mans that killed more than 80 spectators. In turn, manufacturers did not officially support racing teams in the few years following. Car manufacturers were not allowed to promote racing. So, behind the scenes Chevrolet supported a company called SEDCO and they built no more than 18 race ready 1957 Chevys. They started with the lightest, no frills 150 utility sedan and fitted them with high performance drivelines. They were astonishingly fast setting records and taking multiple wins. This one has had a body off frame restoration recreating the Black Widow.
The Black Widow is a piece of Chevrolet motorsports history and for one season, in 1957, the Black Widows ruled NASCAR and were lethal to the competition.
